The Beginning - A Painting

The orange glow from the star spilled through the asteroid belt and into his vision. He had been staring at the belt for hours, watching the Modulated Strip Miner II's diminish the asteroids and waiting patiently for his cargo hold to fill with Dense Veldspar. The distant stars dotted throughout the blackness of space around him were like specks of paint flicked onto a black canvas and he found himself lost inside the picture.

A deep growl from within the ship drew his attention from distant fantasies to the asteroid belt in front of him. From beyond the belt, hidden within the star's glow, an outline began to emerge. His drones were in their bay awaiting launch, but he waited.

There was a quick flash of red before the ship rocked from another hit. From the orange, an Angel Thug, as though it burst from the star itself, shot into view. He slammed his palm down and the two Valkyrie I drones launched themselves into space.

He licked his lips and watched the drones engage the target. The poetic dance of light sparked in his eyes. The drones circled the Angel Thug and dismantled shield and armour as though they didn't exist. As the hull breached, the Angel ship disappeared momentarily within a fireball of debris. A temporary smear across an otherwise perfect black canvas.
